Raw Chili
The other night I made some really good raw chili from The Complete Book of Raw Food. I never thought that chili could taste good in a cool/room temp. state. Turns out that I was proven wrong by this fantastic recipe. With the raw soaked barley and corn, it still had the texture of a real cooked chili. I added some broccoli and tortilla chips to make it a well-rounded meal. If you have this cookbook, I recommend trying this recipe asap!

The Raw Diet and My Body
The Raw Diet and My Body
Since eating a high raw diet I have noticed that my body does not accept many cooked foods. I know this is a sign that my body has gotten used to eating raw, uncooked foods. However, sometimes I am stuck in a situation where I only have the option of cooked foods. So, I eat the cooked food and then feel both bloated and dissatisfied. Often times I will gorge on non-raw foods because they don't satisfy my hunger like raw foods now do.
I would love to be 100% raw, but my main concern is nutrition. I don't want to be lacking any essential nutrients; therefore, I have decided to keep cooked beans and steamed/lightly cooked vegetables in my diet. I've had zero success with sprouting beans. Anyone have some helpful advice? I find that sprouted hummus tastes funny. Oh, and I won't even go into my trial and error of sprouting black beans for raw black bean burgers! Nasty. Nasty. Nasty. I don't know if I didn't sprout them long enough, or what, but it was not a success.

Product Reviews
Soon to come: I have some product reviews that need posting! Everything from raw granola to agave nectar. Be on the lookout for these in the next few days.
Blogger Exchange
Emily over at Nutritiousisdelicious and I have done another exchange! This time it was with bars. I sent her two 18 Rabbits granola bars in exchange for two Cliff Nectar bars. Lemon Vanilla Cashew. In other words, my favorite flavor out of these bars. They are so delicious that I made some of my very own today! I will post about them next time as they are firming up in the icebox. (That's the old school term for refrigerator). ;)

Cute blender card! :)
That's it for this post. I may post a review tonight; it depends on how my homework/scholarships stuff goes. I need to read Part I of The Plague by Albert Camus, work on an essay, do a couple of scholarships, clean my kitchen, and maybe work on a bill for Govt. class. Yay, all done while being sick. Guhhh. Dord. (Dear + lord).

Totally understand where you are coming from with the cooked foods not be as satisfying as raw foods. We feel the same way ;) There is just something about eating pure, wholesome foods that my taste buds just love.
ReplyDeleteI think I heard a rumor that Nectar is going bye-bye. Discontinuing it. Better stock up girl. B/c I am pretty sure it is but google it in case it was just a rumor.
ReplyDeleteThe PB I use per your comment the other day: whatever is on sale!
The raw life and then eating cooked but feeling bleh about it. Totally.
I eat as much raw as i want and if i want cooked, i do that too. I don't live by labels, only by hunger cues. And getting enough nutrition, well, just play around with your diet til you feel like you're in a happy place with it all.
Sprouting beans. Have never tried. I dont like beans, and they dont work with my digestion at all so i avoid them.
:)
That raw chili looks so good, I've decided that I prefer my raw soups to have some solids veggies/beans in them instead of being all pureed.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert on sprouting, but what's not working? Do they taste bitter or do they not sprout at all? Are you using a sprouting bag or paper towels? I know that beans get really bitter if the sprout gets too long, I make hummus when my chick peas barely have a little tail.
I'm far from being high raw still, but on days where I eat all or high raw I can definitely feel the difference when I eat something cooked. Actually I can feel everything a little bit better! It's like everything becomes focused. Man, I should really go all raw :)
Katie, Congratulations on graduating soon! The chili looks super yummy. Hope you're feeling better :)
ReplyDeleteHey katie! First of all your chili looks really yummy, I have that cookbook and im wondering why I havent made it yet.
ReplyDeleteSecondly I believe your right! Listening to your body is the most imporant thing, and the last thing you want to do is get sick from eating raw foods when you went high raw to get healthier in the first place. I myself often find that I can get caught up in the whole "trying to be 100%" dogma or trying to be good enough. But really its all about health. I keep a lot of cooked foods in my diet too. I love soy yogurts and use soy milk on a daily basis. I love oat meal, sprouted grain breads, beans and lentils. And nothings wrong with a cupcake now and again ;)
Answering you statement about digestion I have noticed that a lot of raw foodists are noticing a change in their digestive systems and find that they are having trouble digesting anything else at all. This is what makes me wonder. While I am high raw now what if I decide i dont want to be in the future? I want my body to be functioning at its highest and i dont want my digestion to shut down. For this reason alone im also keeping some cooked foods in my diet. :) Thats just something I read.
Anyways hope you feel better and talk to you soon!
Welcome back!! See? We're all still here--no worries, hehe. I love that blender card! I don't think I could ever be 100% raw since I'm allergic to so many goods in their raw state :)
ReplyDeleteRaw chili?! Looks delicious! Love your philosophy girl, life is too fun to sit around worrying. I can't wait to read more!
